VOTE: Military Service Act (Conscription)

The Military Service Act would mean that all men between 20 and 45 could be forced to enlist in the army and go to war.

FOR

Without Compulsory Conscription, the war would have been lost. Also, would you be ok with not having the right you have today?

1.      It gave a better chance at winning the war with the amount of people provided.

2.      Many of the survivors were proud they had the opportunity to fight for their country.

3.      It provided jobs for young families.

Would we all be where we are today without these rights that came from Compulsory Conscription?

AGAINST

The government believed that conscription was the only way they could win the war, but they didn’t stop and think what effects it may have on the people.

1.     Conscription took away the choice people had when it came down to joining the military, and it took away part of their freedom.

2.     It forced people who were unwilling to join like the French Canadians that were not represented very well in the military and most of the French Canadians couldn’t even understand their officers for they were mostly English speaking

3.     93 percent of the Canadians registered evaded being conscripted anyway so not much actually changed other than 93 percent of men became criminals for trying to stay alive.

These are the reasons why we are against conscription for the people did not evenly agree on conscription across the country so it should have never been passed.

  6. For because upon your death your family is given a large sum of money so they can recover from their loss without worrying about bills adding up, the government pays for a majority of the funeral costs, and they don't have to pay land taxes for an entire year.

  9. Against because the act didn't end up changing much and overall had more of a negative affect and outcome.

  10. To be honest, I'm against, because for one, Canada wasn't directly involved in the conflict. I don't think the Canadians should be required to serve, if they aren't really threatened. Sure, those with a love for Britain should have the right to go, if they so wish. But I don't think it should be required.

  11. Against, because conscription happened much too late in the war for it to have an affect on the outcome [of the war].

  13. Against, because no one wants to fight a war they had no part in starting.

  14. against, most of the men are gone in the first month why make the rest go if they don't want to and they got to their destination late and the war was almost over soon as they got there

  15. Against, it took away there freedom and they said in the beginning that it wouldn't come down to that.

  16. Against, the prime minister had promised they would not use conscription at first. If people do not want to fight in a war you shouldn't force them.

  17. Against, because the soldiers weren't prepared well enough and it took away their freedom that they were promised in the beginning.

  18. I would have to choose against because I agree it took away their rights and their freedom and the fact that they weren't ready at the beginning of the fight

  19. Against because it took away men's freedom and they weren't prepared to fight, so it didn't really make a different over all.

  20. I am for conscription because without it, who would've stepped up to help save the freedoms that we enjoy today?? Conscription helped our country establish its freedom and unite itself.
