  • Assignment 1: Answer ONE of the WWYD questions (5 points)
  • Your answer will be marked out of 5 points.
  • For full points, you must give a very strong reason/explanation for your choice.
  • A simple yes/no/I don't know answer will get 1/5




Assignment 2: World War I Art Interpretation (15 points)
  • Your blog post will be marked out of 15 points.
  • Find a painting, drawing or poem from World War I
  • Learn as much as you can about the painting or poem. 
    • Who created it? (give as much info about them as you can)
    • When?
    • Where?
  • Create a NEW BLOG POST including an image of your painting, drawing, or poem (the poem can be text if no image version is available), the information you gathered about it, and answers to the following questions:
    • What is the tone of the piece?  What feeling does it give the viewer/reader?
    • How do you think the artist/writer felt about the war?
    • Do you think the piece accurately portrays what the war was like?



Assignment 3: Vote on Wartime Legislation (6 points)

  • Each of your comments will be marked out of 2 points (total 6 points)
  • In each debate, vote FOR or AGAINST, and identify the most persuasive point that made you vote that way.
 

Assignment 4: Canadian WWI Recruitment Posters (10 points)
  • Your comment will be marked out of 10 points.
  • Choose ONE of the Canadian Recruitment Posters
  • In a comment on the main thread
    • Give the headline of the poster you've chosen
    • Explain WHO the poster is meant to appeal to
    • Explain what emotion(s) the poster is meant to evoke
    • Tell me how effective you think the poster would have been (on a scale of 1-10)
      • If you think it is very effective, explain why
      • If you think it is not very effective, explain how it could be made more effective
    • Tell me whether you think the poster would be effective TODAY and why or why not


Assignment 5: Research Blog Post (50 points)

  • Research your chosen topic and write an informative blog post based on your research. Imagine that someone who knows NOTHING about the topic has found your blog post.  After reading your post, they should have a pretty good understanding.
  • See the RESEARCH QUESTIONS handout for ideas of good questions to focus your research.
  • The way that I mark these posts will be different than usual.  When I read your blog post, I will pretend I am someone with no previous knowledge of your topic.  After I read, I will rate how much I now know thanks to your research. Your mark will be out of 50.

0-10: I still don’t know anything about the topic

10-20: I learned a few facts, but I am confused about what they mean or why they are important

20-30: I learned something about the topic, but I still have more questions than answers

30-40: I learned quite a bit about the topic, but I still have a few questions

40-50: I learned a lot about the topic and I understand how it was significant to WWI.

Within each range, the difference between the top and bottom score will be presentation (organization, mistakes, images, etc.)


Assignment 6: Reading & Responding (15 points)

  • Choose 1 project in each category (Weapons & Tech, Medicine, People) to read and respond to (You can find clickable titles on the right hand side of the blog)

  • After you have read each post, leave a comment with the following:
    • 1 piece of positive feedback for the author
    • 1 statement - something that surprised you, something that you found interesting, something that changed the way you think about the topic, how you think it would have felt to see this during the war, etc.
    • 1 question that you have now that you know a bit more about the topic

Assignment 7: Answer BOTH of the WWYD questions (10 points)
  • Each answer will be marked out of 5 points.
  • For full points, you must give a very strong reasons/explanation for your choice
  • A simple yes/no/I don't know answer will get 1/5
