Nevinson’s painted a marvelous oil painting in 1917 on canvas. The title quotes from a line from Thomas Grays poem In a country churchyard. The painting has irony in it. When you look at it you shudder at the sight of the fallen soldiers but i think the true meaning is that we gave everything we had to achieve victory. Nevinson was born on august 13, 1889 and was an English figure and landscape painter who was one of the most famous war artists of world war 1.
